I urge anyone interested in preserving quality genealogy sites that give us the opportunity to research and record personal genealogy information for future generations to read the comments about this "new" program that ancestry.com is planning to implement. You will be horrified at the way this software has been designed. It is literally changing the stories people have written, inserting facts about one town, like Buffalo, NY when the family's history is actually tied to Buffalo, Wyoming, and people are losing the heads in their photos as the pgm moves them into circles, an obviously inappropriate format for displaying old photos. In one instance, when a user when into a family tree, he discovered the system had inserted a photo of Hitler, of all people, just because there was some German ancestry. That is beyond offensive. Decades worth of work by subscribers is being changed and bastardized in unthinkable ways such that, once the software takes over, will have to be completely redone. At best, it's unethical; at worst, it's a fraudulent breach of contract.

The truth is, if the company is permitted to do this, then none of the work you do on any website will be safe. They will have set a precedent that gives other companies to do whatever they choose to their sites regardless of it impact on you and your research.

Unfortunately, this site does not let you edit your comment. Big mistake. The errors on the internet are way out of control, so we need to be encouraging people to proofread their writing and then correct their errors, which, for various reasons, are all too easy to make for even the best writers.

Therefore, at the beginning of my 3rd sentence, it should read: "...when a user went into..."

The 5th sentence should read, in part: "...once the software takes over, it will have to be...redone."

And, the 8th and last sentence should read: "They will have set a precedent that gives other companies both the freedom and implied permission to do whatever they choose to their sites and your research regardless of its adverse impact on you and your efforts to create something accurate for the benefit of future generations."

My apologies to the owners/publishers of the site. I now see there's an option that presumably lets one edit his/her writing before posting it. The option says "preview." It's just that it's not very obvious in slightly smaller letters squished together and presented in black on white but not outlined by a box, which is considerably less visible than its adjacent neighbor, the bolder, slightly bigger, white "Publish your Comment" in a dark orange/spice colored box. Ce la vie...:-)

Don't forget to go to the petition site to sign the petition to stop ancestry.com from replacing its significantly superior Classic software with its offensively inferior "new" software. Thank you.
